Is it possible to postpone student loan consolidation to wait for lower interest rates rates?

Question by golfingjake: Is it possible to postpone student loan consolidation to wait for lower interest rates rates?
I graduated 6 months ago with several federal student loans combining more than 40K. Is it better for me to consolidate now or stay put? Will the fed cutting lending rates (now 3%) affect the interest rates that loan consolidators offer? Will i be offered either variable or fixed rates if i consolidate?

Answer by greentadpole
That's the 64 million dollar question. A consolidated loan pays off your existing student loans with variable interest rates and makes a new jumbo loan with a fixed rate.

Of course, the monthly payment for a consolidated loan will be lower, but you can also lower your current loan payments to cover interest for the first two or four years and still pay them off in 10 years instead of 30 with a consolidated.

Honestly, unless you are consolidating because you have multiple locations where you loans are serviced, I would hold off on consolidating until absolutely necessary.

The reason are deferments and forbearance. You only have 36 months of financial deferments available per loan. You only have 60 months of forbearance available on each loan. These delay payment if you ever needed some breathing room with payments.
So if you are unable to make payments because you can't find a job or the pay is too low, you can defer payments (and have the government pay the accruing interest on the subsidized loans) until you are able.
Consolidating the loans, you would limit yourself to only 36 months of financial hardship deferment over the 30 year repayment terms, and most consolidated are structured for the government NOT to pay interest while the payments are deferred.

To make my point, unless you are consolidating for the mere convenience of having all your loans in one location for payment, hold off on it until you need it.

The interest rates for student loans are determined July 1 of ever year. If you keep an eye on the rates, you can put your application in to secure the rate for consolidation.

Q&A: For the eye doctors or people with similar eye problem?

Question by redhottennis: For the eye doctors or people with similar eye problem?
I have scratched corneas (both of 'em) and once in a while they scratch the inside of the eyelid, when that happens, it hurts like hell. I have tried putting a patch on it but it only makes it worse. I have been to some of the best eye surgeons in NYC and they all said that you can't really heal this, the scratches on both corneas are there to stay for the life time. What they couldn't explain was why do they scratch the inside of the eyelid (one doctor said it's because the scratch gets infected and gets swollen and it causes abrasion inside the eyelid). I see a black spot on a light bulb while I have the problem, when it goes away the vision is fine. I keep the eye open and although it hurts upon blinking it heals it over time. Big problem is when I go to sleep it scratches inside the eyelid and I am back to zero the next morning with a lot of pain. I use gatifloxacin eye drops (pretty harsh so I don't use 'em unless I need them). As a doctor would you see a permanent solution to this? Some opthalmologist said I should get diamond pollish (that's what he said is the name of the surgery is). I didn't feel comfortable with it so I haven't done it. The eye surgeon in new york also said to stay away from any laser (lasik or similar) surgeries as that could cause blindness. I am also told to never wear contact lenses. They put bandage lense when I go for treatment but the doctor takes it out when the medication has improved the situation. Any information or help is appreciated. If you think there's a doctor out there who can help, please let me know.
As many different doctors described, the reason why the corneas don't heal is because I have scratches underneath the protective skin on top of the cornea. I do get what you said sometimes, especially in winter when the heater is on and eyes get dry, I wake up in the morning and open the eyes and the pain is just unbearable. Other times it just starts out as little uncomfortable and the abrasion gets worse if I don't put the eye drops. Are you qualified to do those treatments? where are you located? Thank you for your answer, it seriously means a lot to me.

Answer by yagman
I am somewhat confused. If your only problem is "scratched corneas" then when they heal they should remain healed. I wonder if what you are referring to is actually a condition called recurrent corneal erosion. This is a dysfunction of the corneal basement membrane which results in the corneal epithelium not bonding to the basement membrane. This results in repeated erosion of the epithelium that tends to occur more often in the morning upon waking because the eye becomes dry and the lid adheres to the epithelium and basically rips it off when you open the eyes.

If this is the problem, then there are effective curative treatments available. One such treatment is anterior corneal stromal puncture. Another is photo therapeutic keratectomy.

whats the best way to check multiple car insurance quotes at once?

Question by remotefuse: whats the best way to check multiple car insurance quotes at once?
last time i got car insurance, i went to a broker type place, there, the guy used a website to find me the cheapest car insurance, do any of you know which website this is?

Best answer:

Answer by Insuranceman
The broker probably had a proprietary website that he pays for to do comparisons.

There is no ONE insurance company that is right for everyone - everyone is rated individually - and all companies have different "likes and dis-likes", different credit tiers, different business models, and many other factors that can vary your rate - and a QUOTE is ONLY a quote until the policy is issued.

Typically, insurance rates will vary from State to State and can even vary by ZIPCODE! It also will depend on the type of car/truck, coverages, limits of liability, and driving record. Some companies run credit scores and MOST run a motor vehicle report and CLUE (Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange) report to see about undisclosed accident involvement.

The best thing to do is call a LOCAL independent agent or broker. Don't go across town, or to some other city - look for someone CLOSE. Just look in the phone book for the PIA or Big I (Trusted Choice) logos and you will find a professional licensed agent that will be able to help you solve your insurance problems, and give you rate comparisons of several different companies.

An independent insurance agent will normally have a dozen different companies and if he cannot help you, he should be networked with other local agents that can.

In my agency, we have companies that do NOT run a credit score and welcome drivers with "less than perfect" driving records and specialize in youthful operators!

Most of the replies on this site say "go to this on-line carrier or that on-line carrier or that 1-800 number" but I'm sure that when you do, you will find some impersonal computer user with a script to work from and you won't be able to talk with the same person every time you have a problem!

Good luck, drive RESPONSIBLY and I hope this helps!

Hornsby used dead woman's credit card. That's disgusting! Your thoughts?

Question by kooties_2000: Hornsby used dead woman's credit card. That's disgusting! Your thoughts?
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — A Florida football player was kicked off the team Friday after turning himself in on charges he used the gas credit card of a woman who was killed along with another player in a motorcycle accident.

Jamar Hornsby has been kicked off the Florida football team.
Jamar Hornsby, a 21-year-old junior safety, learned Thursday that a judge had issued a warrant for his arrest on charges he used the dead woman's gas card for six months, so he surrendered on charges of credit card theft and fraudulent use of a credit card, lawyer Huntley Johnson said.

Hornsby was released from jail several hours later on his own recognizance.

It was not immediately clear how Hornsby got the card. Johnson declined to comment on the specifics of the case, but said they would cooperate with authorities.

The credit card belonged to Ashley Slonina, a Florida junior. She was riding a motorcycle with another football player, redshirt freshman Michael Guilford, last October that hit a median at a high rate of speed, police said. The two died at the scene. They were not wearing helmets.

Hornsby started using the gas card the day after Slonina died. The card was used 33 times in Alachua County and another 37 times in Jacksonville, where Hornsby is from. The total amount was $ 3,000, said Alachua County Sheriff's Office spokesman Stephen Maynard.

"I would love to hear the explanation for utilizing the card of a deceased person," Maynard said.

The sheriff's office will continue to investigate and forward their findings to the State Attorney's Office, Maynard said.

Florida coach Urban Meyer said in a statement that Hornsby "is not part of our program."

Hornsby missed five games last season after being suspended for selling free football tickets he received as a student. He was also arrested in April 2007 after a fight in Gainesville, but his lawyer said those charges were dropped.

State prosecutors did not return phone messages or e-mails seeking comment.
Not only was that sick and pretty disgusting but that was universally stupid! ( o _ 0 ) Come on Hornsby! Where's your freakin' head at? Nimrodski!
